Fleming Island High School hosted the 6th annual Randy Warren Invitational on Monday, Sept. 14, at Fleming Island Golf Club. The memorial tournament raises scholarship money in the name of the school's founding athletic director, who died in 2019.

FI Eagle Athletics said on X that the tournament funds scholarships in Coach Warren's memory. The Golden Eagles boys golf team both competed in and hosted the event at the course on Town Center Boulevard.

The invitational drew 24 teams and roughly 120 players last year, according to a St. Johns Country Day School Athletics post. Fleming Island junior Tyler Mawhinney, the defending Class 3A individual state champion, won the 2024 tournament with eight birdies in 18 holes, Clay Today reported.

Warren built Fleming Island athletics from scratch

Randall "Randy" Warren served as Fleming Island High School's first athletic director when the school opened in 2003, according to his obituary. He held the post until retiring in June 2017.

Before Fleming Island, Warren was athletic director at Orange Park High School from 1999 to 2003. His career in education spanned 34 years across Clay County schools, Bishop Kenny High School and the University of Tennessee at Martin, where he played offensive tackle.

Warren died Sept. 11, 2019, at age 60.

In his 14 years at Fleming Island, Warren never missed a home game for any sport, according to a memo from then-Principal Thomas Pittman to the Clay County School Board. Under Warren's leadership, the Golden Eagles earned numerous district and state championships. He also tutored students struggling in Algebra II, going back to his roots as a math teacher, Pittman wrote.

"When you think of Fleming Island High School you can say refer to Randy Warren as Mr. Fleming Island High School," Pittman told Jacksonville.com in June 2017, when Warren retired. "Anytime there was an athletic event, he was there over the past 14 years."

The Clay County School Board took up a proposal on Nov. 7, 2019, to name the school's athletic field "Coach Randy Warren Field" in his honor.
