An Orange Park man faces an aggravated manslaughter charge after a Clay County Sheriff's Office investigation determined a child in his care died from abusive head trauma.

Anthony Bryce Thompson, 23, was arrested Saturday, Oct. 3, and remained in Clay County jail on no bond as of Tuesday, Oct. 6, Action News Jax first reported, citing a CCSO arrest report. He faces one count of aggravated manslaughter of a child, a first-degree felony under Florida Statute 782.07.

The child died July 15 after being rushed to two hospitals, according to the arrest report.

Child was taken to two hospitals

Deputies were called to a home that day in response to a report of a child choking, the partially redacted arrest report states. When they arrived, Thompson led them to the child, who was unresponsive.

Clay County Fire Rescue transported the child to HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital. The child was then flown by helicopter to Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville, according to the report.

Authorities initially believed the incident was medical in nature. The arrest report states no conclusive testing had been completed at that time.

Investigation points to abusive head trauma

The CCSO investigation later determined the injury was abusive head trauma, likely caused by severe acceleration and deceleration, or shaking. The report states the severity of the injury showed a grossly careless disregard for the child's safety.

Investigators also determined Thompson was the sole adult caregiver of the child at the time of the fatal injury, according to the arrest report.

He is being held without bond.

The arrest report is partially redacted. The child's name, age and relationship to Thompson have not been made public.

Thompson faces first-degree felony charge

Under Florida law, aggravated manslaughter of a child applies when a person causes the death of someone under 18 through culpable negligence as defined in the state's child abuse law. The offense is a first-degree felony.

Thompson is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, Nov. 3, according to Clay County jail records cited by Action News Jax. No attorney for Thompson has been identified in public records.
