Fleming Island sophomore Sophia Moody ranks 14th in Florida and second in Class 2A girls golf as the Golden Eagles prepare for the District 4-2A tournament later this month.
Downtown Doral sophomore Stella Lind is the only Class 2A golfer ranked ahead of Moody. Fleming Island senior Shayla Abbas ranks 48th in the classification, giving the Golden Eagles two ranked players heading into the postseason.
Moody opened the 2026 season with a 30 at Fleming Island Golf Club and shot below 40 in each of her first 10 matches through early October.
Moody leads Fleming Island's strong season
Moody's performances have helped Fleming Island secure several victories against Northeast Florida opponents.
On Sept. 22 at Hawkstone Country Club in Gainesville, Moody shot a 35 and Abbas added a 36 as Fleming Island defeated Class 3A Buchholz 166-205.
Moody followed with a 33 at Palatka Golf Club on Oct. 1, while Abbas shot a 41.
Against district rival Middleburg on Sept. 9 at Eagle Landing, Moody shot a 34, five strokes better than Broncos senior Braelyn Isbell's 39. Abbas contributed a 41, and sophomore Addison McGarva shot a 42 as Fleming Island won 169-194.
The Golden Eagles also have postseason experience on their side.
Moody won the 2025 district individual championship with a 74 before finishing sixth at both the regional and Class 2A state championships.
Abbas finished third individually at the 2025 district tournament with an 81 and placed 11th at regionals. She qualified individually for the Class 2A state championship but was unable to finish her second round because of an injury.
Middleburg poses district challenge
Middleburg figures to be one of Fleming Island's toughest competitors in the district tournament.
Isbell ranks 35th in Class 2A, while Jordan Bork and Emily Martin provide additional depth for the Broncos.
The teams have a recent postseason rivalry. In 2025, Middleburg and Fleming Island tied at 284 in district competition before Middleburg won a playoff hole to capture the team championship.
Fleming Island coach Brian Nedrich also has McGarva, senior Ashlyn Norton and freshman Callie Kuchler competing for spots in the team's top five.
The Golden Eagles will look to turn their regular-season performances into a district team championship while Moody seeks another individual title.
Postseason begins in late October
The Florida High School Athletic Association has scheduled district golf tournaments for Oct. 26-28, followed by regional tournaments Nov. 2-4.
The Class 2A state championships are scheduled for Nov. 10-11 at Mission Inn Resort + Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.
Fleming Island enters the postseason with two ranked golfers, an experienced lineup and an opportunity to challenge Middleburg for the district championship.
