The western portion of Orange Park Mall lost water service Sept. 16 after a contractor began an emergency repair to the mall's water distribution system.
The Clay County Utility Authority issued a precautionary boil water advisory for the affected area at 1910 Wells Road. The advisory will stay in place until the utility completes bacteriological testing of the drinking water supply.
The advisory does not specify which stores or restaurants fall within the western portion of the mall. Orange Park Mall is the largest shopping center on the west side of the St. Johns River in the Jacksonville area, with more than 110 tenants. Anchor stores include Dillard's, JCPenney, Belk, Dick's Sporting Goods and AMC Theatres.
The utility said in its notice that service will be restored after technicians finish the repair, flush the water lines and verify disinfection levels. The advisory also does not list a specific boil duration for drinking water or water used in food preparation. Residents and mall employees should check CCUA's website for the full precaution details.
How residents and mall workers should respond
While water service is out, CCUA recommends turning off all appliances that automatically draw water. Once service returns, the utility advises running faucets before use. Water may appear discolored if air is present in the system.
How the advisory will be lifted
The advisory notice, written by CCUA's Janice Loudermilk, said the utility will post updates on affected businesses' doors and on its website once the advisory is lifted.
This advisory is separate from a Bradley Creek Parkway boil water notice CCUA issued Sept. 4 and retracted Sept. 6.
