Grumpy's Restaurant is bringing its breakfast-and-brunch menu to Fleming Island on Monday, Oct. 12, filling the former Dick's Wings space at East-West Parkway and U.S. Highway 17.
The new location at 1803 East West Parkway will be the chain's largest. Other Grumpy's stores seat 107, according to Clay Today. The Fleming Island restaurant can hold 170 to 190 people, with 17 tables and 13 booths in the main dining room and a party room for 20 to 30 guests.
Father-and-son owners Dell Hoard Sr. and Dell Hoard Jr. have spent the summer of 2026 overhauling the space. The pair also own the Middleburg Grumpy's on Blanding Boulevard.
"It was hard to turn down a spot like this," Hoard Jr. told Clay Today. "This is just a much bigger store."
The Fleming Island store adds features no other Grumpy's has. A full bar will serve mimosas and Bloody Marys. A free game room gives kids a place to play. Four restroom stalls per side replace the single stalls at other locations.
Even with the bar, the restaurant will close at 2 p.m. daily, matching every other Grumpy's, according to the chain's website.
Hoard Jr. said he expects the party room to stay busy on weekends and hopes to draw church groups, car clubs and other community gatherings throughout the week.
Eight straight Best of Clay wins
Grumpy's locations in Orange Park and Middleburg have won Best of Clay for breakfast and brunch every year from 2019 through 2026, according to the restaurant's website. The chain has also taken Jacksonville's Bold City Best honor nine consecutive years, Clay Today reported.
The Hoard family rebuilt once before. Their Middleburg restaurant closed Jan. 19, 2022, after a kitchen fire swept through the building. No one was hurt. News4Jax reported in late December 2022 that the owners were preparing to reopen after a lengthy rebuild.
On the menu
The Fleming Island location will carry Grumpy's staples: a super-sized breakfast special with two eggs, two pancakes and bacon; a red, white and blue waffle topped with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream; giant omelets; eggs Benedict; chicken and waffles; burgers; and fresh-squeezed orange juice.
The original opening target was early summer, but construction delays pushed it back several times. When the Hoards finally hung a temporary Grumpy's banner on the building, passing drivers honked and gave thumbs up, Clay Today reported.
Grumpy's also operates in Orange Park, St. Johns, Neptune Beach and Wildlight. The Fleming Island restaurant opens at 1803 East West Parkway on Monday, Oct. 12.
