Ponte Vedra's defense and passing attack overwhelmed Fleming Island in a 31-19 home loss Friday, Sept. 18, dropping the Golden Eagles to 2-3 on the season.
Fleming Island struck first. Quarterback Greyson Critch connected with wide receiver Gavin Boysen on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 2:09 left in the first quarter, according to the FI Eagle Athletics account on X. The extra point was no good, giving the Golden Eagles a 6-0 lead.
That was the last time Fleming Island led.
Ponte Vedra junior quarterback Carter Sole took over from there, completing 18 of 34 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns, Jacksonville.com reported. Senior running back Alexander Winkles added 126 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground, giving the Sharks a balanced attack that Fleming Island's defense could not contain.
The Ponte Vedra defense was equally punishing. Linebacker Luke Johnson forced and recovered a fumble, and four different Sharks recorded sacks. Those turnovers and pressure disrupted a Fleming Island offense that had rolled up 46 points in a shutout of Ridgeview just one week earlier.
The win was Ponte Vedra's second consecutive victory over the Golden Eagles, according to Jacksonville.com. Fleming Island entered the game at 2-2, while Ponte Vedra came in at 1-3. Both now sit at 2-3 after five weeks.
Fleming Island head coach Tom MacPherson's squad opened the 2026 season with a 33-0 win over Atlantic Coast before losses to Creekside, 45-28, and Oakleaf knocked the Golden Eagles below .500. The Week 4 blowout of Ridgeview, in which Brady Digman, Zion Longmire and Ryan Siliac all scored touchdowns, appeared to right the ship. But Fleming Island could not overcome the Sharks' pass rush and Sole's three-touchdown performance.
The Golden Eagles now turn their attention to a district showdown at Orange Park on Friday, Sept. 25. Clay Today described the matchup as "a key district game." Orange Park, coached by Marcus Wimberly, improved to 2-3 after beating Parker 28-14 on Sept. 18.
Both teams carry identical 2-3 records into the district matchup.
