Fleming Island re-entered the Northeast Florida Top 25 at No. 20 after shutting out Ridgeview 46-0. The Golden Eagles (2-2) host No. 18 Ponte Vedra Friday in a Week 5 matchup that could strengthen their playoff positioning.
The Duval Sports D1 Week 5 power rankings, published Friday by Andre Ellis, slot the Golden Eagles back into the poll after they fell out following losses to Creekside and Oakleaf. Fleming Island had been ranked as high as No. 15 earlier this season.
Clay High also made news in the rankings, debuting at No. 25 with a 3-1 record after blanking Palatka 35-0. Senior quarterback Landon Martin leads the Blue Devils' offense.
Oakleaf, the area's highest-ranked Clay County team, sits at No. 9 with a 2-1 record after a bye week. The Knights travel to No. 7 Bolles Friday.
Fleming Island shuts out Ridgeview 46-0
Fleming Island's Sept. 12 shutout of Ridgeview was thorough. The Panthers never crossed the 50-yard line, managed just 32 plays and picked up only three first downs, two on personal fouls by Fleming Island.
Senior running back Brady Digman opened the scoring on a Wildcat formation run from the 6-yard line after ripping off a 30-yard carry on the opening drive. Chase Donaldson then blocked a Ridgeview punt, and Zion Longmire punched in a touchdown to make it 13-0 midway through the first quarter.
It was 20-0 before the first quarter ended. Fleming Island led 28-0 at halftime.
A bad snap sailed through Ridgeview's end zone for a safety in the fourth quarter, and Ryan Siliac returned the ensuing kickoff nearly 60 yards for a touchdown to cap the 46-0 final.
Michael Nesmith, who played alongside Garrett Dewey and Sebastian Vigilance on the defensive side in the second half, summed up the difference after the game.
"We knew it was very important to play good defense and finish the game," Nesmith told Clay Today. "Last week we came out and had a strong first half and couldn't finish ... Tonight we got the shutout and got the job done."
Ponte Vedra brings passing attack to Fleming Island
The Sharks (1-3) enter Friday's game at Fleming Island after picking up their first win of the season against previously ranked Beachside, 24-7. Quarterback Carter Sole threw two touchdowns in that victory.
Ponte Vedra's passing attack, led by receiver Trent Player, contrasts with Ridgeview's ground-oriented offense. Clay Today's preview noted that Fleming Island has Chase Donaldson, Siliac and Digman in the secondary to counter it, while interior defenders Landon Howard and Longmire will need to pressure Sole.
The Duval Sports rankings warned that Fleming Island's run-heavy offense "will need to open up other options through the air to meet the challenge of facing Ponte Vedra."
