Drug tests on two Ridgeview High School students hospitalized after the Sept. 19 homecoming dance came back negative. The Clay County Sheriff's Office said it found no evidence of drink spiking.

Three students reported medical issues during the dance. Two were taken to a hospital by EMS and released after a short stay. A third was not transported.

The sheriff's office said Sept. 20 that detectives followed up with the students and their parents and found no reason to believe drink spiking, tampering or drug use occurred.

Sheriff addresses online rumors

Rumors had spread on social media after the dance, with some posts specifically claiming fentanyl was involved. Sheriff Michelle Cook addressed those fears in a Facebook post Sept. 20, as reported by Action News Jax, saying there was no indication of a fentanyl overdose. Detectives are still interviewing students to determine whether gummies or caffeine pills may have played a role.

Cook told News4Jax the sheriff's office would release a full update after all interviews are completed. "We will get to the bottom of it," Cook said.

Security measures, investigation continue

Security measures at the dance included searches before entry. Large bags were prohibited, and only small clutch-style purses were allowed. Outside food and drinks were banned. The only items sold on site were sealed bottled water, pizza and Pelican's SnoBalls.

Deputies and school administrators were on site throughout the evening, according to the sheriff's office.

Clay County District Schools said in a statement Sept. 20 that it had no evidence of drink tampering or safety incidents but that the sheriff's office was actively investigating the reports. The district added that student privacy laws prevent it from releasing further details about the students involved.

One unidentified parent told News4Jax the rumors were "a bit alarming." Another parent said they expected the school "to do better" given its security measures.

The investigation remains active. The sheriff's office said it takes every report seriously and that detectives will continue following up on any leads.
