Clay County Fire Rescue crews rescued an elderly woman trapped in her burning home during a severe thunderstorm, the agency said in a statement first reported Saturday, Sept. 26, by Action News Jax.
The woman called 911 to report her home was on fire and that she was stuck on the second floor. Communications specialists stayed on the line with her while dispatching units and relaying updates to firefighters at the scene.
Crews from Engine 23, Engine 11, Rescue 11, Rescue 23 and Tender 23 responded. They fought through dense smoke, intense heat and severe weather to reach the woman and carry her out. Firefighters then provided advanced medical care, the agency said.
The fire's cause, the home's location within Clay County and the woman's condition after the rescue have not been publicly reported.
The Clay County Board of County Commissioners formally recognized the firefighters and communications personnel for the rescue. The agency praised the responders for their courage, professionalism, dedication and teamwork.
