Whit's Frozen Custard is opening a location on Fleming Island, bringing its shakes, sundaes and frozen custard sandwiches to a shopping center along County Road 220.
The new shop is under construction at 1545 County Road 220, Suite 118, next to O'Reilly Auto Parts. It will occupy the former Mathnasium tutoring center, which relocated across the road to 1524 County Road 220, Clay Today reported Oct. 7.
Whit's has confirmed the Fleming Island location on its website, listing it as “Coming Soon.” An opening date and operating hours have not been announced.
Frozen custard shop takes shape
The Fleming Island store will become Whit's eighth location in the Jacksonville area, joining shops in Atlantic Beach, Avondale, Jacksonville Beach, Kernan Square, Mandarin, South Jacksonville and Oakleaf.
The nearest existing location is at 1075 Oakleaf Plantation Parkway, Suite 111, in Orange Park.
Construction is underway at the Fleming Island storefront, although no completion timeline has been released. The business plans to share updates through its Whit's Frozen Custard of Fleming Island Facebook page.
What's on the menu?
Whit's specializes in freshly made frozen custard, offering vanilla, chocolate and rotating daily or weekly flavors.
Customers can choose from scoops, shakes, sundaes and floats, along with two signature treats.
Whitsers combine frozen custard with blended toppings such as candy, cookies or fruit. Whitties are frozen custard sandwiches served between two cookies.
The company's Fleming Island webpage features these standard menu offerings, although the store's final menu has not been announced.
Whit's expands in Northeast Florida
Michael and Jessica McKinley introduced Whit's to Northeast Florida in May 2014 when they opened a shop in Atlantic Beach.
The couple discovered the brand in Granville, Ohio, where Whit's originated, and later brought the business to the Jacksonville area.
Their operation has since expanded to seven existing locations, according to the company's Oakleaf webpage.
The Fleming Island shop will add another option for residents seeking frozen desserts along the County Road 220 commercial corridor.
The company has not announced an opening date, hiring plans or store hours. Updates are expected through the location's Facebook page and official website.
